# Typeface credits

Every typeface on this site is our own copy of the file, served from this
domain. None is loaded from a foundry's CDN or from Google Fonts, so reading
a page here still contacts nothing but us — the same promise the photographs
make, for the same reason.

These pages carry one script, written inline in the document head: it is what
lets a reader choose the light or the dark scheme instead of inheriting their
machine's. It makes no request either, sets no cookie, and records nothing but
that one choice.

Credit is given anyway: somebody drew these.

Each is a single variable file. The two the reading room reads are about
88 KB and 75 KB; only those two are preloaded, because the other three are
read by the docs and partner surfaces and nothing else.

## What each one is for

**Archivo** carries the reading room: prose, labels, and every number. Its
width axis carries role rather than a third font file — prose is set at 100,
a measurement at 92 with tabular figures, a dense index row at 84. A reading
is therefore visibly narrower and cooler than the words around it, so on a
site made of measurements a number can never be mistaken for a word. That is
the job the monospaced face used to do, done with one file instead of two.

**Bricolage Grotesque** is the display face, at weight 300, on exactly one
line per page. The previous design set its headline in the body face at size,
which meant the largest thing on every page was a size decision rather than a
voice. A face is used here instead, and used sparingly.

**Supreme**, **Tabular** and **Erode** no longer appear in the reading room.
They stay because the docs and partner surfaces still read them.

The division is the point: what a person wrote and what an instrument
reported are set differently, and a reader can tell them apart without being
told which is which.
